Top 10 Tips to Educate Kids on Safety

In light of YOUTH MONTH, SB Security have compiled the Top 10 Tips to Educate Kids on Safety.  The reality is that our kids may witness or be subject to a crime despite our best endeavors to protect them.  We don’t want to scare our kids but we do have a responsibility to have frank conversations about how to deal with and avoid crisis situations.

The Top 10 Tips to Educate Kids on Safety

  1. YOUTH MONTH TIP: What to do in a crime crisis.

Don’t aggravate a criminal who is most likely more stressed than you are.  Unless you are facing an imminent life-and-death situation, don’t fight the criminal and hand over any material possessions.  Anything can be replaced, but not your life!

  2. YOUTH MONTH TIPS: What to do in a crime crisis.

Stay calm & quiet if you aren’t being hurt or threatened so that the criminal can get what they want and move off as quickly as possible.

  3. YOUTH MONTH TIPS: What to do in a crime crisis.

Be as submissive & gentle a dove but as cunning as a fox; keep your head down and listen to all the criminal’s instructions but quietly take in as much information as possible eg. Their clothing, tattoos, birth marks, names mentioned, the car they are in.

  4. YOUTH MONTH TIPS: What to do in a crime crisis.

Don’t be chatty.  Only quietly speak when spoken to and keep answers as concise and brief as possible.

  5. YOUTH MONTH TIPS: How to avoid a crime crisis.

Never walk in the streets or quiet places alone.  Always stay close to friends and family.

  6. YOUTH MONTH TIPS: How to avoid a crime crisis.

When being picked up by parents, always wait safely inside the premises and never outside.  And remember that parents will never send someone you don’t know to pick you up.

  7. YOUTH MONTH TIPS: How to avoid a crime crisis.

Never chat with strangers even if they know your /your parent’s names.  Animals and sweets are two of the most common tactics that predators use to lure children into a potentially dangerous situation- tell your children to keep a safe distance away from any stranger with either of these things and never accept anything from a stranger.

  8. YOUTH MONTH TIPS: How to avoid a crime crisis.

If someone grabs you, all manners can go out the window and you must hit, fight, kick and scream out loudly that they are not your parents.

  9. YOUTH MONTH TIPS: How to avoid a crime crisis.

Never approach a vehicle unless you are absolutely sure you know & fully trust the occupants.

  10. YOUTH MONTH TIPS: How to avoid a crime crisis.

Teach your children the key emergency numbers like Police: 10111, Childline: 08000 55 555, SA Human Trafficking Resource Line (Emergencies): 0800 222 777

Please read and relay the Top 10 Tips to Educate Kids on Safety to your kids today!  The best way for kids to learn these tips is to introduce the subject with discussion.  First, ask them these questions:

  • What do you think about going home with someone from the park or a neighbour?
  • Would you accept food, stickers, sweets or toys from a friendly stranger?
  • If someone who is holding a gun asks for all your prized possessions, how will you react?
  • Would you help a friendly stranger look for their puppy?
  • Who do you think is a “bad” stranger and who is a “good” stranger?  (hint: a bad stranger is ANY adult they don’t know and a good stranger is ANY adult when they are in danger)
  • Has anyone ever made you feel “uneasy”?  Explain that they need to trust this instinct and tell you, the parent, immediately.
